Elenda Earth Day Celebration

We are excited to host the first ever Elenda Open Street event!

On April 22, from 7 a.m – 9 a.m. Elenda Street will be closed to cars for a car-free school commute in celebration of Earth Day.

For one morning, CCUSD students at Farragut Elementary, CCMS, CCHS and Culver Park High will experience a car free route to school. Students will be able to walk, bike, skate, scoot or use transit with out cars!

Culver City High School, Culver City Middle School and Farragut will all be hosting Earth Day celebrations to promote climate-conscious decisions. Culver CityBus, Culver City PD and Culver City’s Sustainability Team will be distributing educational information in front of the high school as part of the celebration.

This two hour, open streets event will allow for kids to have one day with a car free route to school along CCUSD’s busiest school commute corridor. The event will also broaden conversations on safety, transportation and environmental issues. Parents are encouraged to park and walk with their students 3 blocks from their campus, or drop their students along Huron, Coombs, the parking lot at Culver/Elenda or at the pedestrian bridge, North of Ballona Creek.

The street will be closed to car traffic starting at 6:00 a.m. and reopened at 9:30 a.m. Parents are encouraged to use side streets as alternatives that day (see map below), drop your kids off a few blocks for the school or use transit and avoid driving in this area altogether. For parents that drive to school that day, we ask that you use alternative drop areas for your students.

The route map is subject to change and will be updated as necessary. Please check back for the latest information.

Details will be updated as they become available.

Key points (subject to change):

  • Elenda Street will be closed from Culver Blvd. to Farragut. The closure will be in effect beginning at 6 a.m.
  • We recommend that parents drop their kids along Huron, Harter or Coombs or the parking lot along Culver Blvd from Elenda to Coombs, or at the pedestrian bridge North of Ballona Creek and allow them to walk the few blocks to school.
  • We recommend parents use side streets for their morning school commute:
    • Off Culver: Harter, Huron and Coombs
    • Off Sepulveda: Barman, Lindblade and Wagner
    • Off Overland: Garfield, Braddock and Barman
  • Many streets will have turn restrictions. Please plan ahead.
  • Parking along Elenda will be restricted from Monday at 11 pm – Tuesday 10 am

Volunteers Needed:

  • Walking School Bus Leaders
  • Rolling Bike Train Leaders

    • Previous meetings: 2/27 and 2/28
    • Upcoming meetings: TBD
  • You can also participate in the following public meetings:
    — CCUSD/City Liaison Meeting (3/18)

The Culver City Safe Routes to School program promotes reducing the number of single driver commutes to school. We encourage all families to rethink their commutes by parking 3 blocks away or walking, biking, carpooling and using transit when possible.
