CC SRTS Programs

The Culver City Walk & Rollers program strives to ensure that our school zones are the safest possible. We know that traffic volume and traffic safety are the two biggest barriers to parents not walking or biking to school and that car crashes are one of the largest causes of accidental deaths of children under the age of 15. Less cars around schools means safer streets for all.

Slowing down also saves lives. At 40 mph a pedestrian has a 10% survival rate if hit by a vehicle. At 30, it’s 50%. But at 20 mph there is a 90% survival rate.

Safe Routes to School Committees

Each school has a SRTS Committee that meets regularly, establishes guidelines for their school, develops encouragement campaigns and trains the next generation of leaders. Working with the Walk ‘n Rollers team, they are provided resources and training to ensure their success. We encourage all residents to become involved on any level. Contact YOUR SCHOOL for more information, or you can reach our SRTS Coordinator HERE.

Walk to School Days

Each of our CCUSD schools have regular walk-bike to school programs. You can join the fun with your school’s meetup events or walk on your own. To track participation, CCUSD employs a tracking system through Active4.me Each student receives a “shoe tag” with a barcode that is assigned to their class. By scanning this tag on walk to school days (no personal information is recorded), schools can determine how many students participated and which class had the most participants.

Walking School Buses and Bike

Walking school buses and bike trains are great ways for kids and families to work together to make walking and biking to school easier and more fun. Families can begin at a consistent location and walk a regular route adding children as others join the fun. For bike trains, be sure to have at least two adults (leader and sweeper) and that everyone wears helmets and follows all the rules of the road. All our schools have adequate bike parking so please be sure to bring locks and lock up safely. Note, please do ride bikes and scooters on campus ant any CCUSD school.

Currently, only Linwood E. Howe Elementary has an active walking school bus – 11 years strong! Contact YOUR SCHOOL for more information

Be part of the solution! We encourage parents to take the 3 Block Challenge by parking and walking 3 blocks to school at least once a week. Parking just a few blocks away goes a long way towards reducing traffic and pollution around your school while adding some extra activity to your child’s day. Plus, the one-on-one time is invaluable.  It also helps clear out the school zone for those who are not able to walk or bike.

Each school has ample parking 3 blocks away. We encourage parents to review our Walk to School maps to consider options.

The traffic near CCMS and CCHS can be unbearable at times. Most middle and high school students are responsible enough to walk to where you parked, eliminating the need to compete for a space in front of the school (and leaving that space for those who have less options). We highly encourage middle and high school parents to park at Elenda and Culver (Veterans Park paddle tennis courts) or on Overland near Franklin rather than add to the congestion on Elenda.

Carpools

Carpooling is an easy way to help our community be safer and cleaner and provide a higher level of comfort. Even one or two days a week helps, We suggest starting with classmates, neighbors and friends. Coordinating at school events and birthday parties is a great place to build communities and compare schedules and quotes. Utilizing social media and text trees help with managing schedules going forward.
